North Miami, Fl – The team left Graceville on Thursday morning for a long road trip to Miami for games on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles basketball team plays on the road a lot in November and December, having just 3 homes games in the first 2 months of the season. The Eagles started the game down 0-6 but they quickly turned it around taking the lead and pushing it to 5 points at 20-15. FNU fought back hitting a high percentage of 3 pointers as they would the entire game going on a 10-1 run to take lead by 4 at 25-21. The Eagles refused to quit and battled back, on a key possession down 29-31 the Eagles played great defense forcing FNU to shoot as the shot clock was expiring. This shot was rebounded by Valentin Lara who passed it to CJ McKinley who drove down the floor drawing a foul. McKinley hit both free throws to tie the game at 31. A few minutes later down 37-39 Omari Henry got the ball at the top of the 3-point line, put a nice in and out move on his defender that created separation and drove to the rim for a lay-up and tying the game at 39. As the seconds ticked off the clock to end the half Thomas Curlee took the inbounds pass and went coast to coast finishing with a nice one-handed floater off the glass to give the Eagles a 46-42 advantage going into halftime. To begin the 2nd half FNU went on a 17-6 run to take the lead 59-52. BUF fought back starting with a nice off-the-ball hustle play by Solomon Sutton finishing off glass cutting the deficit to 5 points, assisted by KJ Johnson.  Later, the Eagles cut it down to 63-64 following a jump shot from Jordan Isaac, making his debut after missing the opener. This basket was off an assist by McKinley, who had 6 assists in the game to go with a team high 22 points.  FNU followed this with a 15-1 run taking a 14-point lead. The Eagles fought back. Henry hit two free throws making it 80-91, Coach Hughes took a timeout and out of the timeout Henry stole the inbounds pass and passed it to KJ Johnson who laid it in cutting the deficit to 9. FNU, however, proceeded to hit a 3 pointer and outlasted BUF to win 100-88. FNU shot 56% from 3 and 52% from the field. Isaac ended the game with 12 points as the team leader off the bench and Curlee finished with 17, Henry 13, and Sutton 10 to round out the others in double figures.

FNU game

Saturday the Eagles played at noon, a quick turnaround for the team, against South Florida Bible College.  The teams were tied at 12 but then BUF began to build a lead. Valentin Lara ignited a run with a steal and a layup by Jordan Issac. A few plays later Oliver Pratt secured a lose ball, dribbled up to the 3-point line, pointed for Sutton to set a screen and drove to the line putting the Eagles up 22-14. Then to go up 28-20 Pratt delivered a pass to Lara and he finished through contact. The following play Jordan Isacc stole the ball took it the length of the floor drawing a foul, getting to the line and hitting both free throws to put the Eagles up 10. Right before half the Eagles forced a turnover and inbounded the ball with the chance to hold for the last shot. Thomas Curlee hit a 3 with under 2 seconds left to put the Eagles up 17, taking a 48-31 lead into the locker room. To begin the 2nd half SFBS made a charge of their own, getting the score within 2 possessions at 52-58. Issac went back-to-back plays drawing contact and nailing both free throws. He had 16 points going 6 for 6 from the line in the contest which tied for the game high. The Eagles were able to get substantial contribution from their bench in Lara, Pratt, and Issac. Following this SFBS went on a 7-0 run to get back to within 5 and got the ball back to try and make it a 1 possession game but Sutton got a key steal and drove down the lane kicking it out to Curlee who drained a 3 to put BUF back up 8. Sutton would also end the day with a game high 12 rebounds. His hustle and play in these 2 games were key for the Eagles. This would be the story for the rest of the game, they would make a little run, but BUF would respond. Unlike Friday the Eagles were the team that shot well in this game 45% from the field and 56% from 3. BUF won the game 87-79.
