Box Score 2 Eagles play back-to-back extra innings games

Saturday, February 21, BUF opened home play with a doubleheader against a South Region opponent ranked #10 nationally, the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles. The teams were originally scheduled to play Friday, but those games were rained out.
Game 1
Hagan Smith drew the start for the Eagles. Toccoa Falls batted first, and Smith did not allow a hit in the 1st inning.
Junior Paulino reached base on a walk and
Ivan Membreno singled, but BUF was unable to score in the opening frame.

TFC was held scoreless in the 2nd, and Smith went 3 up, 3 down in the 3rd. The Eagles broke through in the bottom of the 3rd. Paulino walked for the 2nd time in as many plate appearances, Membreno singled and advanced him to 2nd, and Paulino scored on the next at-bat to give BUF a 1-0 lead.
Smith continued to deal in the 4th and 5th innings. In the 4th, he struck out 2 and got a pop-up from the other, facing only 3 batters. In the 5th, with a runner on 3rd and 1 out, he struck out a batter for the 2nd out and forced a pop-up to end the inning. He carried a shutout through 5 innings. In the bottom of the 5th, BUF added another run.
Evan Wallace singled, moved to 3rd on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Bryan Calderon to make it 2-0.

The bats cooled off after that. Smith went 7 innings and threw 112 pitches in a quality outing for the right-hander from Alford, Florida. The Screaming Eagles tied the game 2-2 in the 7th, sending it to extra innings. In the 8th, TFC got a runner to 3rd but could not score as the final batter popped up. BUF was retired in order in the bottom half. In the 9th, TFC again advanced a runner to 3rd, but Paulino made an important snag to secure a groundout and keep the game tied. BUF was unable to reach base in the bottom of the 9th, sending the game to the 10th.
TFC led off the 10th with a single. The runner advanced on a hit and later scored on an error. In the bottom of the 10th, Calderon singled, but it was the only hit of the inning, and the Eagles fell in Game 1.

Game 2
The teams were scoreless in the 1st inning, but this game quickly turned into an offensive battle.
In the top of the 2nd, TFC scored 4. BUF answered in the bottom half with 3 runs.

Korbin Odom entered and advanced to 3rd on a passed ball.
Frederick De La Rosa walked, and with 2 on and 1 out,
Quinten Renfroe also drew a walk to load the bases for
Tucker Nix. A passed ball allowed Odom to score, and Nix followed with a line-drive single to left, scoring De La Rosa.
Connor Ward added a sacrifice fly to bring home Renfroe, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
BUF threatened again in the 3rd when
Ivan Membreno reached 3rd but was left stranded.

TFC added 5 runs in the 4th to take a 9-3 lead. Nix doubled to continue his hot start, moving to 2 for 2 on the day, but BUF could not capitalize.
In the bottom of the 5th,
Bryan Calderon reached on an error to lead off.
Andrew Golden entered as a pinch runner and moved to 3rd on a line-drive double from
Cale Barnes. A passed ball allowed Golden to score, and Barnes later scored on another passed ball to make it 9-5. Renfroe singled, Nix singled to right, and
Connor Ward was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 2 outs.
Torin Clark-Hussey drew a walk to bring in another run, trimming the deficit to 9-6.
TFC was held scoreless in the top of the 6th, and the Eagles offense exploded in the bottom half.
Odom led off and was hit by a pitch, then Odom stole 2
nd base. Bailey was also hit by a pitch to get on base, and Quiency McFadden came in to run. De La Rosa doubled to left, scoring Odom. Renfroe followed with an RBI, making it 9-8.
With 2 outs and De La Rosa on 3rd, Nix doubled off the fence in left, continuing his perfect day at the plate and driving in another run. Nix finished 4 for 4. Ward then singled to score Nix. Clark-Hussey and Membreno each added singles, and Ward scored. Clark-Hussey later came home on a passed ball, capping 9 unanswered runs as BUF took a 12-9 lead after trailing by 6 in the 4th.
The Eagles batted around in the inning before it finally ended.

In the top of the 7th, TFC scored 3 to tie the game at 12-12. They threatened to take the lead, but Membreno recorded a crucial strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 7th, Bailey singled to lead off, and McFadden again entered as a courtesy runner. De La Rosa walked to put 2 on with no outs. The next 2 batters were retired, and Ward was intentionally walked to load the bases. However, BUF was unable to walk it off, sending the game to extra innings.
In the 8th, the game was called due to darkness with the score tied 12-12.
The first year program is proving to be tough competition in the South Region.
