Lady Eagles go 2-1 in the Labor Day Classic at Talladega College

Talladega, AL – The Lady Eagles secured their first win in program history on Friday as they defeated Talladega College 3 sets to 0 in the Labor Day Classic at Talladega College. The Lady Eagles stumbled out of the gate, going down 0-5 in the first set of the match. Despite this quick deficit, they rallied to even the score at 9-9. The Lady Eagles lost the lead and went down 14-18 resulting in Coach Thais Franca calling timeout. From this point, the Lady Eagles would not be denied.  Showing great resilience, they finished the set on an 11-3 run, winning 25-21.  In the second set, the Lady Eagles jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never gave it up, winning 25-17. After an early series of lead exchanges in set three, BUF took control with an 8-2 run.  The Lady Eagles won the set 25-22 to sweep the match against the Talladega Tornadoes, who were the regular season champions of their conference last season. 

Isabela Acevedo led the way with 10 kills.  Leticia Amaral had 21 assists; the next highest total was 4. In addition, she had 77 total actions, playing a huge role in the victory and executing all over the court! Szonja Csaba sparked the team and had some big kills, blocks, and serves. She can hit the ball as hard as anyone on this team, is a dominate middle blocker, and is impossible to ignore when on the floor.

 The Lady Eagles also played Oakwood University earlier on Friday, losing in four sets. In the match against Oakwood, the Lady Eagles won their first set of the season and began to play with the lead for the first time. They carried this momentum into the afternoon and were able to put it all together for the first win in program history against Talladega! 

Saturday, BUF played Talladega College again and won in an exciting 5 set match: 19-25, 25-11, 25-10, 16-14! Despite dropping set 1 the Lady Eagles dominated set 2 with 0 lead changes, lost set 3, and dominated set 4 with 0 lead changes. The Tornadoes and the Lady Eagles battled in the deciding set.  BUF rallied after Talladega College reached set point 14-12.  The Eagles rolled to victory by winning the last four points.  

The big weekend for Isabela Acevedo continued as she had 31 assists on 123 total actions in the 5-set match. Three players had double digit kills: Isabela Acevado had 13, Szonja Csabal had 10, and Gabriella Zezza had 13. Barbara Demarco distinguished herself as a leader on the court as a starter, playing every set as the team's libero.  She wears the different color jersey and provides vocal leadership for the team on the court. She led the team in receptions over the tournament with 74.
